Visiting Artist Author and Book Designer to Speak at the Havurah, Sunday, May 17 at 3:00 p.m.On Sunday, May 17 from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m., the Havurah will host Judith Margolis, visiting American-Israeli artist, book designer and author. Margolis will discuss her book “Countdown to Perfection: Meditations on the Sephirot,” and describe the creative process that resulted in this elaborate limited-edition, hand bound book and other examples of her art work. The Hebrew word “Sephirot” refers to the ten energy centers as outlined in the Kabbalah, Jewish mystical teachings. The ritual of counting the Omer, which is done between Passover and Shavuot, serves as a discipline for self-improvement as one grows from liberation from Egypt toward receiving the Torah at Mt. Sinai on the Jewish festival of Shavuot, which this year falls on the eve of May 28.Margolis will share ways in which one can engage this mystical practice of Counting the Omer in a personal and meaningful way thus making the Jewish rituals more authentic and personally meaningful.Judith Margolis says, “Visual symbols ask questions and suggest answers. But good art is open to interpretation. In this work I take the mysterious tradition of counting days and, through my art, turn it into an aesthetically conceptual ritual of introspection.”The book joins together the tradition of counting the Omer, the opportunity to meditate on texts that describe intentions for self-improvement and spiritual change and the inclusion of full color art images meant to comfort, inspire and assist creative contemplation during an inner journey of disciplined attention. The event is free of charge and everyone is welcome to participate. The Havurah is located at 185 N. Mountain Ave. in Ashland. Call 488-7716 for more info.
