--------------------------------------------------------------------------------Transition Town Ashland--------------------------------------------------------------------------------The Local Foods Treasure Hunt for Kids and FamiliesA group of local organizations is preparing a fun and informative adventure for kids and families: The Local Foods Treasure Hunt. On Saturday, September 18, kids and families will gather at the Bellview Grange, where they will receive a treasure map to local farms.[Families will go out to the farms in two groups. If you're in the first group, please get to the Grange at 8:45 am, and if you're in the second group, please get there at 11:00 am.]At the farms, families will be welcomed by the growers, they’ll get a tour of the farm and enjoy some planned activities, and they’ll get to harvest produce. They’ll take their harvest back to the Bellview Grange, where capable cooks will help them prepare a meal to share. Each family will receive a booklet to take home, containing recipes, fun facts, and information about local food and resources. Participating in this adventure will increase awareness and educate children and families about the importance of healthy, locally-grown food. The theme of the day will be The New SOUL Food, where SOUL stands for Sustainable, Organic, Unprocessed, and Local. These concepts will be highlighted with graphics and activities, including a Cozy Corner with storytelling for little ones, a legume/grain art activity, a co-created mural, flower arranging, and a family pureed veggie tasting game. Here’s the menu: Melon balls with mint and lime as appetizer, grilled/roasted vegetables over baked russet potatoes, peaches and blackberries with whipped cream and granola. (Volunteers are needed for the activities and the food preparation.)Tickets cost $10 per family. They’re available at the Northwest Nature Shop at 154 Oak Street, or call Brett to reserve a ticket (info below), or buy at ticket at the Bellview Grange on Saturday, if there are any tickets left. The Local Foods Treasure Hunt is sponsored by Transition Town Ashland, the Ashland Food Co-op, Peace House, Village Farm, Restoration Farm, and Eagle Mill Farm / Happy Dirt Veggie Patch. For more information, to volunteer, to make a donation, or to reserve a ticket, contact Brett Schumacher at 608-772-2738 or schumacher.brett@gmail.com.
