Author lecturer Alanna Hartzok co-founder of Earth Rights Institute speaks on the new social, political and economic paradigm emerging from renewed understanding of the economics of land and the systemic dysfunction, grotesque disparity of wealth, real estate/land speculation, urban sprawl, environmental destruction and the current economic collapse caused by existing land tenure and tax systems.Chief Seattle asked: How can you buy and sell the earth? The answer to that for encroaching Europeans was easy. “Just watch us” we said. People migrated to the new World for land that was free for the taking and 99% wouldn’t have come otherwise. Nothing could stem this tide and nothing was too terrible to perpetrate on the natives of these so-called free lands in the process of taking the land.Failure to understand the economic aspects of our connection to the earth prevented mainstream economists from predicting the kind of economic collapse that we are now experiencing. Everywhere good hearted people are starting to awaken to the issue of the “commons”. This presentation will take you to the next level of how it is literally true that the earth is ours why and how it is possible to take it back easily for the benefit of all including those who now monopolize it solving many related problems in the process.Facilitator's Biography:Alanna Hartzok is Co-Director of Earth Rights Institute, a civil society organization working for economic justice and peaceful resolution of conflicts. She is the author of The Earth Belongs to Everyone, recipient of the Radical Middle Book Award.
