The Forty-two Journeys of the Exodus: A Six Week Class with Rabbi David ZaslowMany people know the major stories in the Bible of the Exodus from Egypt: the ten plagues, Pharaoh letting the Hebrew slaves go, crossing the Red Sea, and Moses receiving the Torah at Mt. Sinai. However, most people do not realize that the Israelites not only lived in the wilderness for forty years, but actually stayed at forty-two resting places, averaging over a year in each location. They also gave the locations names based on what spiritual and psychological lesson they learned in each of the places. Today the etymology of the names of the forty-two resting places can be studied and treated as a psycho-spiritual template to apply one's own life. More than two-hundred years ago the Baal Shem Tov, (literally translated to mean 'the owner of a good name') founder of Hassidism, taught that everyone stops at each of the forty-two resting places during their lives.Rabbi David Zaslow has just completed a book about the meaning of each of the forty-two resting places, which is the first time that such a comprehensive study has been made. Zaslow will teach a six-week class, beginning Tuesday, February 17 at 7:30 p.m., in which participants will learn about this extraordinary psychological map. Rabbi David says, "If you love metaphor and etymology you will really like this class. We will delve deeply into the way that Hebrew words branch out into so many possible meanings." Pre-registration is required. Call 488-7716 to pre-register or with any questions. The class fee is $10 per session plus $25 text fee.
