(Ashland, Ore.) – Hannon Library at Southern Oregon University celebrates Chinese New Year with a demonstration of Kung Fu by Shaolin Temple Master Zheng Hong Feng, followed by a musical performance by the Zhengzhou University Arts Troupe. The free performances will begin on Friday, February 12, at Noon in the Meese Meeting Room. This event is co-sponsored by Hannon Library, St. Mary’s School in Medford, and the Southern Oregon Chinese Cultural Association.Master Hong Feng joined the ranks of the Shaolin Temple’s fighting monks in 1996, performing on tour around the world. The Shaolin Temple was the birthplace of Kung Fu in the Fifth Century. Master Hong Feng was head instructor of the performance troupe, as well as chief instructor for the entire temple. In 2004, he was called into service by the Abbot of the Shaolin Temple to be his personal bodyguard. He is here on a cultural exchange between China and St. Mary’s School, where he is currently teaching.The Zhengzhou University Arts Troupe has just arrived from Henan Province in China, sponsored by St. Mary’s School. The twelve-member group performs traditional music on erhu, pipa, guzheng, dulcimer, bamboo flute and other instruments.
