(Ashland, Ore.) –Southern Oregon University’s Hannon Library will celebrate the Directors of SOU’s Center for Shakespeare Studies on Monday, October 12, 2009, at 4 pm in the Meese Meeting Room at the Library. Alan Armstrong will be honored as he retires from his 24 years at SOU, including service as founding Director of Shakespeare Studies since 1986. Meet the new Director, Don Weingust, who steps into this role from his previous position at Tufts University, where he was the resident Shakespearean in the Drama Department. Special guest speaker will be Lue Morgan Douthit, Director of Literary Development and Dramaturgy at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. A reception will follow, and admission is free.

In addition to heading up the SOU Shakespeare Studies Center since its inception, Alan Armstrong has been an active Shakespeare scholar both locally and internationally. His research and writing focus on both original staging practices and contemporary performance. He was co-editor of the international journal "Literature and History" and has contributed essays and reviews of OSF productions to "Shakespeare Bulletin" since 1990. Armstrong has directed twelve NEH national summer institutes ("Shakespeare in Ashland: Teaching from Performance") and is a senior scholar for the American Shakespeare Center's institute for college and university professors at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London. He has served as dramaturg for several productions at OSF since 2006.

Incoming Director of the program, Don Weingust, is the author of the Routledge text "Acting from Shakespeare's First Folio: Theory, Text, and Performance." Weingust is an active scholar and writer. He is the founding chair of the Shakespearean Performance Research Group of the American Society for Theatre Research. A trained director, Weingust is an Equity actor and has worked off-Broadway and with regional theatres such as Berkeley Repertory Theatre.

Special guest Lue Morgan Douthit has taught classes in the SOU Center for Shakespeare Studies with both Armstrong and Weingust. She is Director of Literary Development and Dramaturgy at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and has been dramaturg for more than 30 productions in 15 seasons, including five world premieres.For further information, contact Hannon Library at (541) 552-6835.-SOU-
