School Supplies Giveaway in Ashland: Saturday, July 28, 2012, 9:00am

LAN’s Fourth-Annual School Supplies Giveaway is Saturday, July 28, 2012, 9:00am – 11am at South Valley Community Human Services Center, 1658 Ashland Street, in the Ashland Shopping Center.

ARRIVE EARLY! Supplies limited to 100 students.

School starts soon, and parents are helping their children to round up required school supplies.  For some families, the added expense for these items can be prohibitive or impossible. A group called Love Ashland Network (LAN) is reaching out to their neighbors again this year by offering free backpacks filled with basic school supplies to anyone who needs them.

The backpacks and supplies valued at 25 dollars contain notebooks, pens, rulers, erasers, pencil pouches and other items suitable for students grades K-8.  All the items are brand new. Any student may receive a backpack, there are no applications, and no questions asked. Anyone in need is eligible. One hundred backpacks are available, so arrive early!

LAN is a group of anonymous Ashlanders established in 2008 concerned about the wellbeing of low-income residents of Ashland.

LAN believes events like these are important awareness-raisers for those in Ashland who are concerned with the needs of others. "There are a lot of people in Ashland who want to help, and they don't realize there are many things food stamps don't buy for example, an anonymous volunteer said, “and we help provide a way for them to get involved..."

Also note: LAN’s “Resources for Lives in Transition Program” is a token-operated vending machine dispensing free personal care items Monday-Friday at South Valley Community Human Services (same location.) Everyone is eligible, ask for the free tokens at the front desk.
