SASSY! in AshlandWith overwhelming audience participation and enjoyment at our initial events in 2009, SASSY! is having its second 2010 event on Sunday, February 28, in Ashland! What is it? Well, SASSY! is a catchy acronym for Stage And Screen Sing-a-long, Yeah! It gets its inspiration from a somewhat similar sing-a-long program in the San Francisco Bay Area that our local co-organizer, Roy Sutton, used to enjoy.Sutton and co-organizer Larry Marshall (who had attended NYC's Performing Arts High School and had been a featured teen performer decades ago in Broadway musicals and musical theatre aficionado even since) have gathered a dream team to run these monthly – hopefully – gatherings of local fans of Broadway and movie songs who love to sing them. The song leaders will be Laura Derocher and David Gabriel; the accompanist will be Darcy Danielson!Laura brings a wealth of experience performing in musical theater in Chicago; David does likewise – from Seattle. The two of them have delighted local audiences in many musical productions at the Camelot Theatre in Talent, including “Children of Eden”, “1776”, “Into the Woods”, “It Takes Two”, and “Spotlight on Tony Bennett”.Darcy has been with the Oregon Cabaret Theatre in Ashland for 18 years, participating in 54 musical productions as director, pianist, composer, etc. Her 6 years with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival include being music director, pianist, composer, Green Show performer, and – last year – Associate Music Director and pianist for “The Music Man”. If you’ve seen it, you probably noticed her head bouncing above the orchestra pit as she conducts the musicians while playing the piano – and maybe shouting Shipoopi! This year, Darcy will be the Music Director for OSF’s 2010 production of the musical, “She Loves Me”.We have also invited a surprise guest, a retired, major Broadway, TV and movie star to join us, possibly reprising the songs he originated on the Broadway stage and TV years back.A feature of SASSY! is that there will usually be a theme for the evening, and the song selections will tend to be picked to fit the theme. On February 28, the theme will be a "Love Fest" including classic Broadway, TV and Film songs dedicated to Valentine's "Month" (why only a day!), with beautiful, heartfelt songs. Songs we'll all sing, as well as solos, will include:"My Funny Valentine", "If I Loved You", "Make Someone Happy", "People Will Say We're in Love", "Do I Love You Because You're Beautiful", "When I'm Not Near the Girl I Love", etc. The lyrics for each song will be projected on a large screen, and many of the songs will be audience requests from the available theme-fitting selections.Event will be on Sunday, February 28, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM, at the Mountain Meadows Community Clubhouse at 857 Mountain Meadows Drive, Ashland. Coffee, tea, and cookies provided around the midpoint. All ages are welcome, and the fee – to cover expenses – is $5 for adults, $2.50 for students, payable at the door. (To get there, drive north on Mountain Avenue past North Mountain Park to the top of the hill just before the I5 overpass and turn right on Fair Oaks Avenue. The Clubhouse is entered through the main entrance of the 3-story building straight ahead of you.)
