It is the nature of music to transform.  After we have heard a compelling piece of music, we are different.  What better way to explore the nature of death and all its aspects, from joy to sorrow and perhaps even redemption and release, than through a concert of live music.

Duo pianists Nancy Correll and Annette Gurnée-Hull, singers Kevin Sharkey and Kamala Stroup Calderoni, and oboist Virginia Ryder present Piano Voce in a such a concert on Sunday, March 6, at 4 p.m. in the Unitarian Fellowship, 87 Fourth St., Ashland.

Tickets $15; children under 12 FREE.  Tickets available at the door.  For information: 541-482-4755 or RVUUF.org.

From the wealth of great music that addresses the subject, Piano Voce has chosen selections that explore spiritual and emotional aspects of this universal human experience.   From J.S. Bach’s redemptive images and ideas of what happens after life to the thrilling excitement of “danse macabre” by Camille Saint-Saens, through the bittersweet music of Poulenc, written for a friend, concertgoers will themselves undergo a metamorphosis of sorts.

The sense of transformation is strong through music.  It says “We are not as we shall become.”  Although we don’t know what that will be, it is a belief as universal as it is varied.  Beliefs include everything from a physical life after death to a wave disappearing in the ocean. We will be different.

It is well known that music therapists help people move through and heal and move through the spiritual and emotional states brought about by grief, depression, or physical

illnesses such as cancer or stroke. A new study from the Montreal Neurological Institute reveals that even the anticipation of pleasurable music can make people feel good, releasing dopamine. And, the better you feel, the healthier you are!

So treat yourself to a wonderful and transformative concert by Piano Voce and friends on March 6 at the Rogue Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.
