Teacher: Jesse HershPruning for the Backyard Farmer is for anyone entrusted with tree care. This full-day course is designed to teach you everything you need to know to maintain healthy and abundant fruit trees, shrubs, and vines. Learn why we prune, how to prune, and familiarize yourself with basic tools, safety and related topics. The first half of the day consists of lecture/discussion, the second half will be hands-on. Discussion of timing, tree restoration, coppicing, plant forms, and how trees heal will be included. We will also relate basic plant physiology to pruning practice, i.e. why we we do what and when, to provide a full picture of why people cut trees. Reference handouts will be included. Please bring a pair of sharp hand clippers, and loppers and a pull saw if you have them, plus glasses of any sort, work gloves, a hat, and lunch.Jesse Hersh is a student of nature with a certificate of horticulture from Merritt College, Oakland, CA. He grew up pruning his parent's backyard orchard and loves working in and with trees. He currently gardens in Ashland and pursues a graduate degree in environmental education with an emphasis in botany.
