  • the role of adversity and evil in fiction,
  • and a bad guy's many uses in a successful story.

Categories include unlikable protagonists, antagonists, villains, sociopaths, and monsters. Morrell also explores the rise in popularity of anti-heroes and how these complicated characters reflect contemporary society.

Afternoon Session: ($30.00 for members, $35 for other participants) 1:30-4:30.

Anatomy of a Scene – Jessica Morrell will guide us to:

  • Delve deeper into how to write a scene, the types of scenes needed to tell a story, and how to infuse change and emotional reversals into scenes.
  • Read an action scene, an opening scene, and an exposition scene from three novels and discuss the choices the author made to create his or her scene.
  • Discover how to breathe life into scenes using finer elements like mannerisms, gestures, and foreshadowing, to larger elements such as using surprises and cliffhangers.
  • Pay special attention to the components of action scenes and as an exercise compose an action scene that stretches our imaginations and our way of seeing the writing process.
