(Ashland, Ore.) – “Poetry Important to the World,” a talk about how poems from different places have influenced everyday life, will be presented by Oregon’s Poet Laureate Lawson Inada Thursday, April 8, 2010, at 4 pm in the Meese Room (# 305) of Hannon Library at Southern Oregon University. The talk is part of the 2009-2010 lecture series sponsored by the Friends of Hannon Library. Light refreshments will be served and there will be time for questions.Appointed as Oregon’s fifth poet laureate in 2006, Lawson Inada is an emeritus professor of writing at SOU. He has been honored with fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and a Guggenheim fellowship. His books of poetry include Legends from Camp: Poems, and Drawing the Line: Poems, for which he received the Oregon Book Award. He received the Governor’s Arts Award and the Pushcart Prize for Poetry. He was editor of Only What We Could Carry: The Japanese American Internment Experience, a collection of written and visual expressions related to the internment. He collaborated with his artist son, Miles Inada, to create the animated film “Legends from Camp.”The event is free and open to the public. Parking will be available in lots 21 and 27.
