Lily Gardner, Portland author of A Bitch Called Hope, will offer a morning presentation on “What Makes a Good Character” and an afternoon workshop on “Character Building: How to Create, Enhance or Expand Characters and Get Them On the Page”
Morning Session: (Free to members-$5.00 for visitors) 10:00-12:00 (networking at 9:30).

- The principle of maximum capacity
- How to make sympathetic or non-sympathetic characters work
- Give your characters an edge
Afternoon Session: ($30.00 for members, $35 for everyone else) 1:30-4:30.
Character Building Workshop
- How to Create or Enhance Characters: Writing exercises using prompts to create new characters or round out existing characters
- Expand your Characters: Writing exercise using the character dossier and action scenarios
- How to Get your Character on the Page: Description, Dialogue, Conflict: competing agendas, Observation—how your character sees the world
Lily will bring hand-outs for all attendees. Bring paper and writing implements.
Lily Gardner is the author of A Bitch Called Hope, a noir mystery set on the rainy streets of Portland, Oregon. She learned fiction at the table of Carolyn Altman and Tom Spanbauer’s Dangerous Writers twelve years and a million words ago. She continues to study with storymeister Jim Frey. She has also written and published dozens of articles on folklore. Currently writing her second novel, Lily lives in Portland with her husband, two corgis and several thousand books.
