Northbound Train will be performing Saturday, May 1 at the Havurah in Ashland at 8:00 PM for a benefit dance and concert. Comprised of local musicians, the band plays rock ‘n’ roll of the 60’s to 80’s in a jam style.Band leader and drummer, Gary Hansen, left a band in the SF Bay Area when he moved to Ashland 12 years ago. Says Hansen, "Life got in the way of music. In November 2007, I finally realized that I no longer had time not to be in a band, and resolved to form one. Northbound Train developed over 18 months. It was a surprise that in some ways, forming a band was more challenging than completing medical school."Since May 2009, the band has performed at half a dozen local venues, and has expanded its repertoire from its original influence of the Grateful Dead to include songs from Creedance Clearwater Revival, Rolling Stones, Bonnie Raitt, Ike and Tina Turner, and Lynyrd Skynyrd, along with some original material. The band’s goal is to have serious fun with the improvisational jam, and to share this energy with their audience. Other members include Dave Storie on guitar and vocals, Leo Gorcey on guitar and vocals, Ann Marie Boniakowski on vocals, Jack Latvala on keyboards, and Theo White on bass. Rabbi David Zaslow asks, "Love to dance? Love the Grateful Dead? Love the groove of a great dance band? Please join us for what promises to be a fantastic, concert & dance."The benefit dance concert will support the Havurah's Hebrew School. Refreshments will be available. Tickets cost $10-$15 sliding scale and are available in advance in the Havurah office or at the door. Call 488-7716 for more info. The Havurah is located at 185 N. Mountain Ave. in Ashland.
