SOU Gamelan Degung Leuwi Asih – “Beloved Valley” Gamelan – directed by Barb Barasa will perform on Tuesday, June 4th, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. at the Library Plaza in front of the Southern Oregon University Hannon Library. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will take place in the first floor fireplace alcove of the Library.

The SOU gamelan ensemble features SOU students and community members performing traditional gamelan degung music from the Sunda region of Western Java.

Gamelan is an ancient form of music which originated on the islands of Indonesia. Each area of Indonesia has a distinct tuning system and style of playing. The term “gamelan” refers to chime, drum, and gong instruments and the people who play them. Traditional gamelan music is cyclic in form and ranges in spirit from meditative and mellow to very energetic. It has influenced western composers like Claude Debussy, John Cage, Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Mickey Hart.
