Michael Winograd Klezmer Trio in Concert, Saturday, January 14, 7:30 PM at the Havurah in Ashland

"Perhaps the leading voice of the younger generation of performers and composers within Klezmer, Yiddish and new Jewish music" – Professor Joel Rubin, University of Virginia Department of Music.

"An unusual but intriguing ethnic amalgam; one that expands upon from both contemporary and historical sources." - Michael G. Nastos, All Music Guide

On Saturday, January 14 at 7:30 PM the Havurah opens its doors once again to host The Michael Winograd Trio in concert. The Trio, composed of Michael Winograd on clarinet, Patrick Farrell on accordion and Benjy Fox-Rosen on bass, features three of the top klezmer musicians in New York today. Blending infectious traditional melodies with new compositions, sumptuous chamber music-like arrangements and breathtaking improvisations, this rising newish ensemble is out to redefine the sound of contemporary klezmer. Rabbi David Zaslow says, "If you love Klezmer and classical music this is the concert for you! The trio's arrangements are so deep, inspiring, and touching you feel you are in the hands of brilliant classical masters."

Benjy Fox-Rosen is a singer, bassist and composer creating new Yiddish music. Ranging from re-imaginings of Yiddish art songs, to original settings of the poetry of Krakow's Mordechai Gebirtig, his compositions create a “vivifying concert of old lyrics in new bottles.” (Zachary Berger of The Forward) Fox-Rosen recently released "Tick Tock" (2011) to critical praise. His following recording, an album of original settings of the poetry of Gebirtig, will be released on John Zorn's Tzadik Records in 2012. Fox-Rosen has toured extensively in Central and Eastern Europe, and has taught at the Krakow Jewish Culture Festival, and the Vilnius Yiddish Institute.
