Ashland Oregon’s 5th annual Independent Media Week will showcase a coalition of independent media producers, local activists and community groups organized around the theme “A well-informed citizenry is a cornerstone of democracy”.Running April 19th - 25th, Independent Media Week is a grassroots campaign to inform and empower citizen by showcasing local efforts and to expand and inspire hyper-local media production.Once again, media activists and community volunteers are organizing the week’s activities, and are inviting participation and attendance from all interested citizens and organizations. This year, groups will be hosting independent media and video showcases which highlight the rich variety of local independent media. During the week we will broadcast coverage over Rogue Valley Community Television (RVTV) and KSKQ Community Radio Station. In April 2005, the City of Ashland officially proclaimed its first Independent Media Week with a goal to broadcast “Democracy Now” and launch KSKQ, our local low-power FM radio station. The headline speaker at the event was Amy Goodman of “Democracy Now”. Every year since, a coalition of local independent media organizations have asked the City of Ashland to proclaim the 3rd week in April, “Independent Media Week”. This year the proclamation will be made at the April 7th City Council meeting. We are fortunate to have a strong coalition of community partners and organizations who help organize activities and programs throughout the week. Each organization takes initiative for their own events and helps provide logistical support and outreach for each other’s events. Coalition partners are Rogue Independent Media Center, S.O.U. Media Collective, Southern Oregon Labor Council, Peace House, Rogue Valley Community Television, KSKQ-lp 94.9 FM Community Radio, Southern Oregon Jobs With Justice and Citizens for Peace and Justice.A full, updated schedule of events is available at http://www.kskq.org/imw/.
