On November 5, So. Oregon Willamette Writers presents:

How to Write a Breakout Novel with Robert Arellano

Robert Arellano is Associate Professor of Creative Writing at Southern Oregon University and the author of six novels, including the 2010 Edgar-finalist Havana Lunar. His short story 'Kettle Run' was selected for publication in Akashic Books' new collection New Jersey Noir  to be released this month. Launched by the award-winning best-seller Brooklyn Noir, the Akashic Books noir series anthologizes all-new stories set in a distinct neighborhood. In the introduction, editor Joyce Carol Oates writes: "Betrayal is explored with exacting verisimilitude ... in Robert Arellano's 'Kettle Run' with its achingly convincing portrayal of teenaged and older 'losers.'"

Morning Session: (Free to members-$5.00 for visitors) 9:30-12:00.

"The Essence of Noir." The hottest literary genre of the moment, noir is neither mystery nor detective story, but something altogether darker. Arellano will take you through the development of this form and point to suggestions for authors budding to write the breakout story or novel.

Afternoon Session: ($30.00 for members$35.00 for visitors) 1:30-4:30.

Let's Get Complicated -- elaborate means to an elegant ending, with apologies to Donald Maass, literary agent. Arellano will take you through an advanced workshop on taking your germ or draft of a narrative and making it come to life by actually adding (as opposed to editing):
