Holly Near has worked for over 40 years as a singer, songwriter and teacher. With her powerful voice, wry sense of humor, and curious mind she interprets the songs of the folk tradition, Broadway, cabaret and pop with equal grace. Near is joined by pianist John Bucchino, with whom she has worked for 29 years. Rounding out the sound is emma's revolution, Pat Humphries and Sandy O, contributing guitar, banjo, ukulele and exquisitely tight and complex vocal harmonies. Performing material from her recent recording, Peace Becomes You, old favorites from her earlier repertoire and a few standards from the American Songbook, Near presents a thoughtful, uplifting evening of music.
Holly has been recognized many times for her work for social change, including honors from the ACLU, the National Lawyers Guild, the National Organization for Women, and the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.
"I do not separate my music from my heart nor do I separate my ideas from my daily life. I open myself up to learning as much as I can about humanity and this mysterious life experience, but I do not relate to political work as a series of 'causes.' Moment by moment, I integrate what I learn into my personal life, personalizing my politics. It is from this personal place that I write my songs."
