Æ (pronounced ash) in Concert, Thursday, June 3 at 7:30 PM & Singing Workshop on Friday, June 4Their repertoire includes songs from Appalachian, Balkan, Caucasus Georgian, and Corsican traditions.

On Thursday, June 3 at 7:30 PM the Havurah will host Æ (pronounced ash) in concert. This is a show not to be missed!Aurelia Shrenker and Eva Salina Primack have been performing together as Æ ("ash") since 2007. These two young women bring together their deep understanding of different vocal traditions to create something new and daring with each song. Æ's work is rooted in folk culture and never falls short of being visceral and provocative--in their music, youthful exuberance and reverence for ancient tradition seamlessly coincide.Accordion and Georgian panduri often add a further dimension to the naked and honest beauty of two unaccompanied voices, creating a rich tapestry with varied texture and ambiance in their live performance."On hearing Æ, my life changed for good; a hollowness which I was scarcely aware of has been filled - nourished in the extreme by these extraordinary people and the heartbreakingly beautiful intertwining of their voices."-David Wilson, Museum of Jurassic Technology. On Friday, June 4 from 1-3:00 PM the duo will offer a workshop at the Havurah for lovers of singing of all abilities. In this two-hour workshop, Aurelia and Eva will teach songs from the aforementioned traditions (generally drawing on the Balkan and Georgian repertoire), focusing on specific and unique elements of pronunciation and ornamentation as well as genre-specific vocal production, vocal technique and exercises, intonation and emotional expression.Aurelia and Eva's joint teaching style is supportive yet exacting, playful and mindful, with a balance of traditional methodology and individual interpretation. Their workshops offer a glimpse into their creative process and musical philosophy, and create space for their students to develop technique while accessing their own creativity and joy through simple yet profound folk harmonies. The workshop is open to singers of all levels, prior experience and ability to read music are not required.Concert tickets, $15, $10 students and free for children under 12 years of age, and workshop tickets, $15, are available at the Music Coop at 181 “A” St. in Ashland or online at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/111670.
