Fracking is a technique by which gas is extracted from mineral deposits - a process which consumes huge volumes of water and, unfortunately, produces equally huge volumes of polluted wastewater. Due to exemptions embedded in the 2005 Federal Energy Policy Act, energy corporations are allowed to inject toxic and carcinogenic chemicals under pressure into the ground to extract the resource. At Southern Oregon Climate Action Now’s (SOCAN) April meeting, see how a community stands together, and directly challenges fracking. April 28, SOCAN presents “Groundswell Rising: Protecting our Children’s Air and Water.” This provocative documentary tracks a people’s movement to protect life, today and tomorrow. The video is followed by a discussion of how this story relates to the Jordan Cove/ Pacific Connector pipeline planned for Southern Oregon. To quote Mark Ruffalo, “Besides the incredible information on fracking’s detriment to our health, [this film is] also a great look into what it is like to live in a town with fracking in the backyard….Plain and simply, it’s the human side of this debate.” The program is free, open to the public, and is part of Rogue Valley’s 2015 Independent Media Week. April 28, 6pm, Medford Public Library, 205 South Central Avenue. For more information, contact Dr. Alan Journet, SOCAN Co-Facilitator, alanjournet@gmail.com , 541-301-4107.
