Teacher: Larry KornUntil his passing in 2008 Masanobu Fukuoka farmed using a unique no-tillage method of natural farming on the island of Shikoku in Western Japan. His techniques required no machines, no chemicals, and very little weeding. Mr. Fukuoka did not plow the soil or use prepared compost. He did not hold water in his rice fields throughout the growing season and yet the richness of the soil on his farm improved with each passing year. His method creates no pollution and uses no fossil fuel, and yet his yields are comparable to, or exceed the most productive farms in Japan. In this one-day workshop we will study Mr. Fukuoka’s farming techniques and his compelling “do-nothing” philosophy. We will examine the methods he used to improve the soil, manage his rice and barley fields, his 12-acre citrus orchard and grow vegetables like wild plants. Slides will illustrate his farm and his two 6-week visits to the United States. We will also discuss the similarities and differences between natural farming and Permaculture and do a walking tour of Restoration Farm.Larry Korn lived and farmed with Mr. Fukuoka’s for two years in the mid-1970’s. He translated and edited Fukuoka’s landmark book, The One-Straw Revolution, which was recently reprinted by the New York Review of Books. Larry traveled with Mr. Fukuoka and translated for him during his trips to the United States including the Pacific Northwest. Larry will also share personal anecdotes about Mr. Fukuoka and his family, as well as stories about life in the mud walled huts in the orchard with the other student workers.Cost: $45.00 with lunch included.Register online.
