“Transformation Through Tattoos” is the topic of a free lecture at the Universal Rites Tattoo studio in Ashland, Thursday, March 5th. Award-winning tattoo artist Benja Burlingame presents a lecture/slideshow of tribal and contemporary tattoos that demonstrate how the tattoo ritual can be used as a tool for personal transformation. Open house begins at 6:30 p.m. and the presentation starts at 7:00.Located at 611 Siskiyou Blvd, Suite 2 (next to Safeway in Ashland), Universal Rites Tattoo studio will be hosting a monthly series on tattoo art and culture, from ancient to modern times. “Through both imagery and intentions, tattoos have the power to bring about permanent individual change,” said Benja. “Tattoos can heal us, protect us, empower and transform us.”The April presentation, “Tattoos 101,” is a general overview of what to look for in getting a tattoo, including how to choose a tattoo artist and the tattoo process. A slide show illustrates what makes a good tattoo and how to avoid something you’ll regret.The following three lectures are a series “Ethnographic Tattoo Traditions and Designs” that covers a different tattoo culture each month.
