Beginning March 1, 2013, Southern Oregon University’s Hannon Library will open its doors to the First Friday Artwalks. On the first Friday of every month, from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM, visitors can view the art and artifact collections on display in the university library. Guided tours will run every half hour, beginning at 5:30 PM until 7:30 PM, but visitors are welcome to explore on their own and even meet guest artist Meera Censor.
Didn’t know the library had art? Hannon Library actually has a wide variety of exhibits with something to interest just about anyone. There is a number of paintings and prints on display, as well as an exhibit of historical photos from Jackson County icon, Peter Britt. There’s an extensive series of work from renowned artist Betty LaDuke. Kids will enjoy meeting Swampy, the giant swamphorse sculpture created by SOU alumna Tricia Johansen, and visitors of all ages can appreciate the Schuman Collection of Musical Instruments. The Hearn History of Printing and Writing Collection features historical books and manuscripts from around the world, and the incredible bronzes from Meera Censor’s Humanitarians for Justice, Nonviolence and Peace Collection shouldn’t be missed. And let’s not forget the library’s most recent addition, the We Are Here sculpture, a signature piece of local culture.
Admission is free and open to the public, no registrations or signups required.
