Persistence and resilience are the two concepts that we hold dear for Ultimate Peramculture.  As we dream of a lovely and regenerative future for the Rogue Valley we might find that the biological resources and carrying capacity of this beautiful but heavily extracted landscape can be restored.  It will take culture not competition to build the sort of momentum that will lead us through this time of transition.  What might our lives be like when we learn to live within limits?  How can we steward the renewable resources and protect the gifts that this complex corner of the wild west blesses us with?
Stories are the traditional touchstone of culture.  With a set of visionary stories that paint a mural of possibilities we can start building new/old motifs and imagine a tapestry of lifestyles and community that fit this wonderful place.  Our dwellings, seasonal work and colorful embellishments would be very different from the global consumer motifs that we all have become accustomed to.  We can inspire our children and we can take the first steps, however small, to move forward ina glorious and lovely way.
Tom Ward has taught dozens of permaculture courses over the last 30 years, primarily in Southern Oregon and Northern California.  He has degrees in forestry and botany from Syracuse University, and is the author of Greenward Ho!
