Cuba lost its main source of oil when the Soviet Union folded in the early 1990's. The challenge of creating a new low-energy system was met with commitment and ingenuity, and a more sustainable society evolved. Smaller organic farms and urban gardens replaced large-scale petroleum-based agriculture.
