Reservations are now being taken for the 25th annual Passover Seder at the Havurah Synagogue in Ashland. The Seder ritual and meal will be held on the second night of Passover, Tuesday, March 30 at 5:30 PM. Passover is the springtime Jewish Festival that celebrates liberation of the Jewish people from enslavement in Egypt in 3,300 years ago. The holiday of Passover tells the story of how the Israelites were transformed from a loosely knit group of tribes to a people who escaped enslavement, received Torah and thus became a nation. Jews have been retelling the Passover story for more than thirty-three hundred years. The word Passover in Hebrew is Pesakh and the word has its origin in the skipping, leaping action of lambs. Rabbi David Zaslow says, “ 'The Leaping Over Festival’ might be a more accurate title for this holiday. Leaping implies that the obstacle is still there. The journey from here to there, from slavery to freedom is one we all make. Sometimes, we don’t elimate our obstacles, we simply leap over them. Maybe the term, ‘a leap of faith’ comes from this notion. How do I get out of my chains, habits, negative attitudes? How do I remove myself from the forces of Pharoah that I grew up with? How do I get out of my private Egypt which in Hebrew is ‘Mitzrayim’ meaning tight, bound and narrow place? For eight days Jewish people eat no bread or wheat products that contain yeast or leaven as a sign of humility and the rapid speed at which change can take place in our lives. Everyone, Jews and non-Jews alike, is welcome to join us at our Seder.” Ayala Zonnenschein, Havurah Program Director, adds "Our Community Seder is music-filled, thought-provoking, and a beautiful Seder that feels intimate even with 135 people."The gourmet meal will be prepared, as it is each year, by Marlane Webb of Larks Catering. To make reservations call 541-488-7716. The Seder is usually sold out, so please call early to ensure your place. The Havurah Synagogue is located at 185 N. Mountain Ave. in Ashland.
