On Saturday night, May 15 at 7:30 p.m. Rabbi David Zaslow, spiritual leader of the Havurah, will talk about the mythos surrounding the Brooklyn Dodgers and their fabled rivalry with the N.Y. Giants and the Yankees between 1947-1957. Baseball is called the national pastime, but it is also the national archetype. Rabbi David will discuss how athletics has a spiritual component, and can be a force for positive change in culture. Rabbi David says, "In 1947 when the Brooklyn Dodgers integrated the Major Leagues by bringing Jackie Robinson onto their team a new paradigm for race relations began. This was actually the beginning of the modern Civil Rights Movement."There will be a small exhibit of Brooklyn Dodger and other baseball memorabilia on display, and for collectors there will be a silent auction including personally signed photographs by Sandy Koufax, Carl Erskine, Duke Snider, and Johnny Podres. Also to be in the silent auction are signed baseball cards and baseballs autographed by Billy Crystal, Bobby Doerr and Duke Snider. In addition, Dennis Goldstein will offer for sale vintage and original baseball photographs of players, teams and stadiums from the 1900s through the 1960s, including Dodgers, Giants and Yankees items. Dennis grew up loving baseball. That love eventually led him to collect historical baseball photographs and write baseball articles that have been published in Sports Illustrated, American Heritage, Ken Burn's works and numerous other publications.Dennis will give a short talk, "Baseball Anecdotes" in which he will present a variety of entertaining stories relating to his baseball experiences and research. In addition, author Richard Seidman will read an excerpt from his forthcoming book "The Secret of Ebbets Field."Entry fee is $3. The Havurah is located at 185 N. Mountain Ave. in Ashland.
