Larry Brooks the author of five published psychological thrillers and an instructional writing book, “Story Engineering: Mastering the Six Core Competencies of Successful Writing (Writer’s Digest Books), ranked #1 on the Amazon.com list of writing books, is the featured speaker at the October 1st meeting of Southern Oregon Willamette Writers. Starting at 10 a.m., in the Central Point City Hall Council Chambers, his morning presentation is called “Writing in Context to….What?”

“This is a fresh new perspective, considering what your writing process is in ‘context’ to,” says Brooks. “Is it somebody's book? A novel you've read? An idea?  A theme? Your gut instinct? The session won't try to make anybody right or wrong, but it will heighten an awareness that stories need context, both on the process and content levels.”

Brooks is also the creator  of www.storyfix.com, an instructional website for fiction writers (novelists and screenwriters), named to the 2011 "Best Websites for Writers" list from Writers Digest Magazine and rated by users as the #1 writing site on the internet.

Then, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., Brooks will hold a workshop, “A Tour of the Six Core Competencies of Successful Storytelling.” Building on the morning, the afternoon session will  cover  Concept, Character, Theme, Structure, Execution, and Voice,  with an emphasis on Brook’s specialty, structure.

Born and raised in Portland, Oregon, and now dividing his time between Portland and Scottsdale, AZ, Brooks teaches workshops around the country, and is a frequent facilitator and keynote speaker at Willamette Writers and Oregon Writers Colony events.  “I often refer to my workshops as "mildly disturbing," though attendees usually apply other adjectives,” says Brooks.

The presentation, open to the public, takes place at 140 S. 3rd St, Central Point. Doors open at 9:30 a.m. for networking. The morning session costs $5 for non-members. The afternoon session is $35 for non-members and $30 for members.  For further information or to register, contact Phil Messina at soww77@gmail.com or www.willamettewriters.com/1/southernoregon.php.
